JDC West is the largest undergraduate business competition in Western Canada. The three-day event is held every January and challenges students to work towards becoming well-rounded business leaders. Over 600 students from twelve of Western Canada’s top universities compete within four categories: Academic, Athletic, Social, and Debate. University of Regina will host JDC West 2020 in Regina, Saskatchewan
Students are given the chance to apply their knowledge in real world business situations while also developing networking, critical thinking, and leadership skills, preparing them substantially for after graduation.
Coaches, judges, and alumni are given the opportunity to support the future of business in Northern BC by shaping the minds of our best and brightest commerce students.
Corporate sponsors and partners have their brands and organizations exposed to the next generation of business leaders, while also receiving acknowledgment in both the school and community through various events and marketing initiatives.
UNBC JDC West 2020. Today’s Business Students. Tomorrow’s Business Leaders.
There are ten academic teams composed of three students each, with each team focusing on a different discipline. These disciplines are Accounting, Business Strategy, Business Technology (Previously MIS), Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resources, International Business, Marketing, Not for Profit, and Operations Management. The teams have three hours to solve a business case and form a presentation without any outside resources, twenty minutes to give their presentation, and five minutes to answer any questions the judges have.
The debate team is made up of four members, with three speakers and a note-taker. Debate at JDC West follows the Canadian Parliamentary Style, regarding any topic pertaining to business. Once given their topic, the team has thirty minutes to prepare their argument and then compete in rounds totalling 50 minutes.
The athletic portion of JDC West is composed of two sports, with teams facing all competing schools in both sports at the competition. Designed to encourage a team atmosphere and well-rounded business students, Athletics is unrivaled in excitement and passion. The sports for 2019 are Tsegball and D-Hoops.
The social component of JDC West is absolute insanity. The team is composed of two females and two males, who throughout the competition must check in every half hour in order to see if there's a challenge. Challenges could be anywhere at anytime, with past examples including physical and mental tests. Not only do the social members have to compete in these crazy challenges, they must do it while wearing a costume with an extreme lack of sleep. Social is the embodiment of creativity, teamwork, passion, and most importantly, heart.
